of the house of representatives. >> you make a great point about public opinion here. newtown united is a group that has already formed and has already shown up there in washington, d.c. this is a compilation of people who live in newtown, and one of the people who spoke -- very touching, one of the fathers whose son survived the attack at sandy hook. >> every time something like columbi columbine, aurora are happening, i would avert my eyes and i will still think that something will be done. but all those beliefs were shattered on friday. and now i think we all need to speak up. >> as we know, as we have been reporting today, it is one of the busier days for funerals and wakes, taking place for those that have been lost in the newtown tragedy. it is almost too raw for many of them to get involved in this kind of advocacy or this kind of support. but have you signaled to any of your colleagues, in other states, where this has been a tragedy, as we look at what we have witnessed in aurora, colorado, tucson, arizona, are you trying to reach out to build a coalition of your colleagues from states

from newtown, connecticut, is what seems like the inevitability now that the next united states secretary of state is going to be massachusetts democratic senator john kerry. nbc news has been able to confirm that senator kerry will be nominated for that job by president obama likely sometime this week. senator kerry is not expected to face significant opposition in the senate. if he does become secretary of state, that, of course, would mean a special election in massachusetts for his senate seat. that has to happen 145 to 160 days after the seat becomes vacant. one of the mamz rising to the top of the list is a potential john kerry replacement in the senate is vicky kenny. vicky kennedy, the widow of the late senator ted kennedy. asked by local news outlets whether she might be up for this job, a spokeswoman for vicky kennedy said, "we have no comment on this at this time." in other words, stay tuned. finally, another state that has just dealt with what massachusetts is contemplating right now, the prospect of replacing a long-time senator, is the state of south carolina. toda

, but at the same time, i'm hearing from people here in newtown, particularly people in law enforcement, you know, i come to this issue and this place with a career in law enforcement 30 years as a federal prosecutor, united states attorney, as well as state attorney general for 20 years and my colleagues in law enforcement say to me you have to do something about assault weapons, high capacity magazines, both very instrumental in this crime and so there is a sense of helplessness but also a sense of mission that citizens on the streets, in the churches, are saying to me, we need to do something. it is a call to action. >> and do you feel that same call to action? because we've had a lot of these. i mean there was a young girl that died in tucson in the gabby giffords shooting, a lot of people that died, but a 9-year-old i think that died in that. we had a baby killed in the aurora theater. and this is sort of horrific beyond imagination because there's so many young people. we've heard this before. and there is -- you know, there are people saying wait a minute, can we not do anything just as a kne

even one tiny iota of the courage those teachers, that principal in newtown summoned on friday, if cooperation and common-sense prevail, then i'm convinced we can make a sensible, intelligent way to make the united states of america a safer and stronger place for our children to learn and to grow. thank you, and now i'm going to let the vice president go and i'm going to take a few questions. and i will start with ben. >> thank you mr. president. i'd like to ask you about the other serious issue consuming this town right now the fiscal cliff. >> right. >> haven't you pre trade some of the voters who supported you in the election by changing your positions on who should get a tax increase and by including social security benefits now into this mix, and more broadly there seems to be a deepening sense that negotiations aren't going very well right now. can you give us a candid update, are we likely to go over the cliff? >> well, first of all, there is no reason why we should. remember what i said during the campaign, i thought that it was important for us to reduce our deficit in
